Peanut butter and other news

Have you heard about the recall of peanut butter that has been found to contain salmonella? I hadn't paid attention to it much, because I don't buy the Peter Pan brand that has been named among the culprits, but this morning my DH heard on the news that Walmart's Great Value brand has also been implicated. Uh oh! Off to the cupboard I went, and sure enough, my new unopened jar of peanut butter bought last week has the numbers of doom on the lid.

Normally I don't worry much about stuff like this, as living in Pakistan for so long made us laugh at salmonella and not fear unclean conditions even where food was concerned. But we are no longer as tough as we once were while we were living there, so I'm playing it safe and tossing the suspect peanut butter. I can get a refund if I send in the lid, so I guess I'll do that.

Here's a link to an article about it put out by ConAgra, the company that makes the problem peanut butter:

Peanut Butter Red Alert

Go now and check your cupboards, my dears!

Today I'm getting my stuff together to spend tomorrow at the library.  DH is at the stage in the bathroom reconstruction where he has to take out the toilet to put in a new one.  As usual, it won't be a simple job, because major alterations to the pipes have to take place -- which means most of the day without a toilet.  That's not such a fun prospect to be facing, so DS and I will plan on spending our day elsewhere.  I'm looking forward to it being a good day to do some relaxing library-type things.  It seems like a good way to start out a new week!

Speaking of the library, DS has landed several VOLUNTEER jobs there, which he is excited about.  They are good jobs, even though he will be doing them as a volunteer, but he has high hopes that having his foot in the door at the library will make him more eligible for an interview the next time a paying position opens there.  At least he will have something regular to do out of the house that he enjoys, that he is good at, and that will look nice on a resume.

The result of my hassle with low-blood sugar was that I gained three pounds, but I think I am back on track to losing it again.  I decided to try a new approach to Weight Watchers, and I have switched to following the Core Plan for a couple of weeks -- eating healthy foods without counting the points.  Anything not on the list of Core foods gets its points counted.  It will be an interesting experiment, if I can get used to it.  We'll see if it makes a difference.  Sometimes just changing ones routine provides enough refreshment to begin making progress again.

Maybe it will help if I stop eating peanut butter....   ;-)
