What shall be my goals for this year?

I don't actually have any goals/resolutions formulated and on paper as yet, but I'm working on it.  I'm feeling good and I'm excited about how things have been going so far.  I know, I know, it's only January 2, lol!  But I had a good day of getting things done yesterday, and that's an encouraging way to begin the new year.

More later on that -- what I want now is to go with an odd thought I had just now, and ask for your help.  What do YOU think I should consider adding to the list as a goal or a resolution when making up my plans for the new year?

If you have any suggestions, thoughts, comments, advice, etc., please share it and don't be shy.  I am truly interested in knowing what you think.

Thanks for your help, my friends!

I'm not doing New Year Resolutions, so I'm not sure what to suggest.

For myself I can only say that no matter if it's the beginning or the end of the year that I'm trying to be the kind of person I want to be - to use my personality traits for good and not for evil.

Hmmm ... maybe one thing: that - amid all the things that need doing, and the hurrying and harrying pace of our time - you don't forget to live.

use my personality traits for good and not for evil and amid all the things that need doing, don't forget to live -- excellent, excellent suggestions, which shall go at the top of the list, because that will affect all the other things I plan for the good.

*hugs*

I love the "List of Doom" for all the obvious reasons, and I know it really very often feels like an overwhelming burden you are carrying through a desolate land, but since you are making today "Fellowship of the List" day I shall offer that it may be time for the List of Doom to have a new name or at least a new focus in 2007. What if the list was joyful rather than burdensome?

I can imagine what Tom Bombadil might do with such a list - laugh and disappear it into another dimension probably - and yet his list is always finished with a song and a light step. And Gildor would find the entire concept rather amusing because his focus is on the undying lands.

But we mortals do need our lists and disappearing them doesn't really accomplish anything (I have lots of experience with that) and the undying lands aren't getting any closer just by thinking about them. I guess I would like to carry (and see you carry) the List of Doom with a song and a light step and eyes fixed on Valinor.

Maybe we need some yellow boots.

*gets out her yellow boots*

Tom hummed happily to himself as he trod the invisible path that skirted the borders of his land, his own little country. His duty it was to be aware of what went on within his borders, and beyond. There were many feet that wandered in the world, and Tom must be ready if they wandered his way.

A good day's work, it had been; feet that wandered had been set straight, and evil had been thwarted. Yes, a good day's work!

And Tom trod the path, and watched his borders, and hummed as he went; and where Tom walked, evil crept away.

A good analogy, my friend! I knew you would have something thoughtful and insightful to share. ;-) I think the List of Doom would definitely be easier to bear with a little help from Tom.

That quote is from a tale of mine, btw: http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=5223

I love this idea and analogy!

I don't have any specific suggestions for you, but I wanted to share what I'm doing about resolutions this year. I've listed resolutions and goals. For example, instead of resolving to "lose 15 pounds", I've resolved to exercise 6 days per week and listed a goal of losing a pound a month. I think separating the *goal* from the *action* will give me a better chance at sticking to it.

I do, however, appreciate your resolution to start posting at Walking With Hobbits, and I'm going to join you in that one!

[identity profile] lin4gondor.livejournal.com 2007-01-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! That's definitely important, to differentiate between goals and how you will accomplish them -- the actions can always be adjusted to make attaining the goal workable, if one doesn't seem to be getting closer to the mark.

I'm not a very good resolution-keeper, so *sounds like an interfering old lady* far be it from me to offer suggestions! However ...

I know you're working on unpacking and getting settled in your lovely new home. You're shoveling snow, and in a couple of months you'll be doing yard work and flower gardening. I was just thinking that part of getting settled and comfortable in your new home will include getting to know your new neighbors. (In all honesty, that's a hard thing for me if the neighbors don't come calling first, but it does help me become settled and happy in a new neighborhood.)

In any case, have a blessed and joyful 2007!

*hugs and brownies*

I'll stop now.

Well I think any of the things I listed in my 12/31/06 2007 post would serve us all well. But, if you want something a little less philisophical and something a little more practical.

I would have to go with work on keeping healthy this next year. I know you had several bouts with bad colds and coughs and sore throats. So maybe good health would be a good thing

[identity profile] lin4gondor.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
((((You))))

Sorry to be slow about getting back to you on this one.

I need to copy out what you wrote for your goals, they were excellent. I think a few of those on my list would be very helpful. I do need to make sure I watch my health, and do what I can to keep myself from those colds.

I don't know you well enough to make a personal suggestion, but I can tell you a strategy that works for me: the one-word mantra. I'm terrible at resolutions lists or even the slightest bit of complications to resolutions . . . I just can't keep them in mind for longer than a week (pitiful, I know).

But one year I chose a one-word plan: HAPPY. I repeated that word to myself when I needed it, and change really did happen in my life. I became happier because I remembered to make it so.

This year my one-word resolution is SLOW. I would like to add THINK to that but I'm afraid of making it too complicated! SLOW hopefully I can handle, because I do really need to slow down. Maybe the thinking will come naturally afterward. :)

Can you narrow it all down to one word?

[identity profile] lin4gondor.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to be slow about getting back to you on this good suggestion!

I think I can narrow it down pretty well -- the word would probably be DISCIPLINE or BALANCE or better yet, DISCIPLINED BALANCE. That's pretty general, I know, but those words would encompass all I want to see in my life. Not just to have my list of what needs doing, but to have the discipline to just go do it, and not do it to the exclusion of the other things that are important. Maybe that way I can avoid pressing the Panic Button so often!

It does sound like SLOW is a good word for you this year, I do hope it helps you to slowing down in a way that is helpful to your sense of well-being.

hi i wanted to bury this where others probably wont find it :) its me. i'm using this journal at lunch today to write up that dream/goal thing we've both been talking about. you're the only one who knows about this journal, my other friends know about the berior one, so i wont use it for this :)

talk to you later. if you have problems seeing it, let me know... it should be public though i think. i'll go make sure.

[identity profile] lin4gondor.livejournal.com 2007-03-06 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi there! Seems like a fitting post to bury yourself in. ;-) I friended you back -- though if you want to keep it really under wraps, I can unfriend it and just get email notifications of when you update it. That works quite well! I'll go ahead and do that, I think.

Looking forward to seeing what you have to share. I have to go out to buy ingredients for a curry for tonite, but I'll be back later!
