Winter is upon us

Oooo, this is exciting!  Here's what the severe weather alert for our area is telling us....

A SERIES OF STRONG COLD FRONTS WILL MOVE THROUGH WISCONSIN BEGINNING 
FRIDAY...ALLOWING SEVERAL SURGES OF BITTERLY COLD AIR TO OVERSPREAD
WISCONSIN. THIS ARCTIC AIRMASS IS THEN EXPECTED TO RESIDE OVER
SOUTHERN WISCONSIN THROUGH AT LEAST THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK.
THESE FRIGID CONDITIONS WILL BE THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES OF THE
SEASON...AND PERHAPS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES IN THE PAST DECADE.

AT THIS TIME...THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO OCCUR FROM
SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH NEXT WEDNESDAY...WHEN LOW TEMPERATURES MAY
FALL FROM 10 TO 20 DEGREES BELOW ZERO...WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES
STRUGGLING TO GET OUT OF THE SINGLE DIGITS.

IN ADDITION TO THE COLD TEMPERATURES...DANGEROUS WIND CHILL READINGS
OF 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO OR COLDER WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE AT TIMES.

BEFORE THIS BITTERLY COLD AIR ARRIVES LATE FRIDAY...ANY PERSONS
OR INTERESTS SUSCEPTIBLE TO VERY COLD TEMPERATURES SHOULD BEGIN
PREPARING NOW. ENSURE THAT YOUR FURNACE AND AUTOMOBILES ARE IN GOOD
WORKING CONDITION...AND CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS
FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THESE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITIONS.

The nice thing about this kind of cold is that it's too cold to snow and then you don't have to go out in it to shovel!  Let's hope that's how it works, anyway.  ;-)

Oh, that kind of cold sounds... miserable to me, but at least if you don't have to shovel snow that would make it bearable. You don't know me, but I've visited your LJ occasionally because I also really enjoy Boromir, though Aragorn is my favorite LOTR character. But I just think the way Boromir is so often portrayed is awful so I really have enjoyed Son of Gondor and hope to read Lords of Gondor soon. I also like the scriptures on your site... they are refreshing and usually give me something to think about or hit me just right at the time.

That's a really, really long introduction sort of thing. :) I just wanted to ask if I could friend you... I didn't want to do it without asking. It always seems strange when someone shows up on my list and I have no idea who they are. :)

Brrr! Sounds like a good time to bake some bread and simmer some stew and make other uses of the stove and oven! Oh, and your fireplace, maybe! And layers, wear lots of soft layers to keep warm.

I love cold, cold outside temps when it's warm inside -- especially if it's cold and sunny, so the sunshine makes the house feel nicer.

Anyway, stay warm and safe, dear Lin, in your lovely new home!

Stay warm! Stay inside and drink lots of hot tea and hot chocolate! Get a nice fuzzy blanket and cuddle under it and watch the weather out the window while you are nice and cozy in your house. And if you are feeling really cozy you can always light a nicely scented candle too...

Just like our winters in North Dakota - one thing I DON'T miss! We've been in the teens and single digit temps here and that's more than enough for me! Oh, by the way, it doesn't get "too cold to snow", it's just that snow usually comes when a slightly warmer air mass meets the colder.

Now, for some frigidly cold weather fun: When it's in the 10 below zero temps, bundle up well, boil a pan of water and while it's still boiling run (carefully of course) outside and fling the water in the air away from you. The shock of boiling water hitting such cold air causes it to explode into little ice crystals. Bang! We did that in ND when Meg was little and it was so neat. Try some food coloring in the water too, if it works you can get blue or red or whatever ice crystals.

What a fun thing to do when it's cold, we'll try that. It is currently 0 degrees, and feels like -17. ;-)

I expect you are right about it never being too cold to snow. We are actually supposed to get flurries tomorrow, when it is predicted to be even colder. One thing is, that when it's really cold and it does snow, the snow is pretty dry and easy to sweep away.

10-25 below zero...ow. Makes my face hurt just thinking about it, I would think your nose would be the first thing to notice. Can't even imagine that temp here... Stay warm, stock up on cocoa and ingredients for grilled cheese-and-soup and wrap an extra blanket around Boromir's shoulders...you know he'll never admit it's chilly. ;-)

We're having a bit of a snow day here. hehe. Everything is shut down and I am working - kinda - from home.

Reminds me of when I used to live in the Northwest Territories. Often 60-below there. Froze up so fast you couldn't feel it and kept having to clear my nose of ice chunks. Something totally unrelated, I saw the weight ticker on your info page and have now added one to my cup_of_stars info page. I'm ready to really get back at it and that ticker is a first step. A real kick start, Thanks! And keep those tootsies warm!!
