Well, my dears. I was going to come here today to tell you about my very nice Christmas holiday, but the news this morning has put that aside for a time. I am speaking of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, of course.
I would ask all who pray to join with me in keeping the country of Pakistan in mind in these days. As someone who lived there for many years, and who has some idea of the intricate oddities of politics there, you can imagine how upsetting it was to wake up this morning and learn that Benazir has been shot and killed by a suicide bomber, who also then killed others by blowing himself up.
Whether or not one thought of her as the best leader for that country, she was an amazing woman who was much loved, and this is a very tragic and devastating occurrence. More than anything else, this is going to throw the country into much chaos, at a time when it is critical that there be as little chaos as possible, so please pray for peace and stability, and protection for the other leaders of the country at this time. We also have many close friends there, and in times like this, there is always concern for their safety.
I am sorry now that I never found the time or the words to explain -- as I actually intended -- some of what the current situation over there means to someone who lived there during other elections and military coups and dictatorships. I shall find the time and the words soon, I hope, but first I will see how things develop in the next couple of days. I am expecting it to be rather bad, to tell you the truth.
And think of me, too, because it's hard to hear news of something so horrible happening in a place that I still consider home though I haven't lived there for 5 years or so.
