It's been even longer between posting new chapters this time around, and for that I am truly sorry. Perhaps no one is even still reading this story that keeps stalling, but I hope I am right in saying that the stalling is finished -- it is my goal to complet this tale this year! To that end, I finally have a new chapter to share.

Thanks in advance for reading!

linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
Well, this chapter has been a long time coming.  I can't really believe it has been more than two years since my last update, but it was a really strange two years, as I think everyone can agree!  I did not give up on this story though it may have seemed like it to some readers!  With this new chapter, I am hopeful that I can keep going with some new momentum now!

Thanks in advance for reading!

Lords of Gondor Chapter 59 -- Hope is a Choice )

I've tried over and over again to post the latest chapter update here, but the cut will simply not work! It cuts the title only, and leaves the long bank of text of the chapter visible -- which defeats the purpose of a cut, of course! So I am going to give up and post a link to the latest chapter instead.

Lords of Gondor Chapter 58 -- Horns from the North

Sorry for any extra steps it might take to read and/or comment, if you are so inclined!
linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
So....

The last time I posted an update with a new chapter for my ongoing story Lords of Gondor was July 2013 -- that's 6 years ago!! Believe it or not, I have continued to work on it in the time between then and now. I have actually managed to write 5 more chapters (yes, that's right, it took me 6 years to write 5 chapters -- what can I say, I have a busy life!). I am hoping it's going to go a bit more quickly and smoothly now, though my original goal of finishing it this year might not actually come to pass -- we'll see! In any case, I am posting the latest chapters here under the cut, the latest one being Chapter 57, which was completed today!

If you have totally forgotten what this story is even about, the easiest way to get caught up is to read it at one of the archives where it is posted in its most complete form:

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Day 13

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some great examples include: complete a bingo, sign-up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep postponing. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback, or answering comments.

I have several goals that I would like to see accomplished -- this year, if possible!

1.  I want to finish two Works In Progress that have been dormant for far too long:

Dreaming New Dreams This one is almost finished, but it will take some research and a revisiting of the fandom (Major anime/manga) to get back into it enough to complete it.

Face of the Enemy This one has possibly four or five chapters left to bring it to a conclusion, but I am totally stuck in a place where I have to write a battle. I know a lot of what needs to be included in the chapter, but I left it too long and now I'm a bit blocked with writing it. However, I love the story, and I definitely want to finish it this year!

2.  I want to add more than just one or two chapters per year to my epic Work In Progress:

Lords of Gondor. I've been writing this one for something like ten years, so I think it's time to make some better progress. I used to be able to churn out a chapter a week, but those days are long gone. But a chapter a year is not acceptable!

3.  I want to post a "new" project:

My very first multi-chapter story that I ever wrote was called 110 Days (Lord of the Rings fandom) and was shared on a limited basis in an LotR community and its archive. I have wanted for some time to revise this story to correct some errors in the timeline and to make it more in line with book canon. It won't take much to get it in shape, because it's still quite good, if I do say so myself! I then want to start posting the edited and revised chapters on a wider basis in all the archives where I upload my writing.

If all this happens this year, it will be awesome (and a miracle), but these goals are actually doable if I behave myself and manage my time wisely and don't get writer's block. Of course, I'll be involved in other writing challenges throughout the year which I won't be able to resist because the prompts are so appealing, but these are my always-in-front-of-me goals that I will continue to pursue until they are accomplished!

linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
Ugh -- it's been almost a year since I updated this story!  The fact that I think about it daily and work on it frequently must have disguised the fact that it has been longer than I thought since the last chapter.  I shall have to do better than that if I'm ever going to finish this story -- which I definitely plan to do.

But here it is at last, the next chapter in the tale of Boromir's return to Gondor:

Lords of Gondor Chapter 52 )Lords of Gondor Chapter 52 )

Thanks for reading!

linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
One of the LotR writing communities I belong to is having a discussion based on a meme called "30 Days of Headcanon", in which each day you explain a little something about your own views of the "universe" you write.  I couldn't resist sharing a little something for Day 2, which concerned "something about a character you are hopelessly in love with."  That would be Boromir, of course.  ;-)

When I first started reading LotR as a young person in 8th grade, I was immediately drawn to the Men of the tale. I was very fond of the hobbits (Sam in particular) but it was the stories involving the Men that really piqued my interest. I started out as an Aragorn fan, but somehow, after a second reading of the trilogy, Boromir worked his way into my affections, and once he got my attention, that was that.

I still have old copies of the trilogy where I have underlined in green pen all the times Boromir was especially cool or honorable or strong. It was always special to me to see how many times he is mentioned or remembered with honor and respect by other characters even after his death! I've underlined every word of it. ;-) My favorite Boromir "adventure" in LotR is the time they spend on Caradhras, where I believe Boroimir's true character shines out as he is instrumental in saving everyone from the snow storm.

Boromir's fall from grace as he is tempted by the Ring endears him to me much more than it angers me, because he is shown as being very much a real person who has faults and weaknesses, and who has the strength of character to acknowledge those weaknesses in the end, even though it is after his fall. Sometimes it takes a hard fall to help people see clearly where they need to change, and I think Boromir was like that. After almost 35 years of loving Boromir, when the idea came to pursue how that acknowledgement of his own weakness and fault might have played out if he had survived at Amon Hen, I couldn't resist, and began exploring through writing Boromir's journey towards home and redemption. That was ten years ago, and I'm still working on it!

I'm only slightly less in love with Boromir's family.  Faramir and Denethor are such a part of Boromir in my headcanon that my love for him extends to them as well -- and even further, to all Men of Gondor!  Having so many awesome Men to write about makes for a pretty fun time, I must say.  ;-)

But Boromir is still my favorite, and there are still many stories about him to be written that I haven't discovered yet in my "universe."  Guess I'll go work on writing some of those now!
linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
Success!  I have reached my goal of 7,000 words added to my Lords of Gondor WIP -- what a relief!  The total word count between the three chapters written for the Finish-a-thon challenge comes to 7,078 or so, so I just barely made it.  But I'm content.  Now I'll just have to keep my momentum going and not let months pass before I add Chapter 52.  ;-)

Without further ado, here are Chapters 50 and 51:

The story which won the Finish-a-thon 2012 poll was Lords of Gondor. Thus, I am committed to writing 7,000 words for this story by the due date of June 8th at midnight! Real Life is holding me back from making the progress I wanted to make towards this goal, but I'm not giving up. I'm a third of the way there with this latest chapter, yay!

Here is Lords of Gondor Chapter 49, the first installment towards my Finish-a-thon 2012 goal:

Well, it's been five months or so since the last chapter, but I'm finally back with a new one.  I'm seriously trying to be more committed to this tale, so hopefully it won't be a long break before the next one!  :-D

Enjoy!

Thanks for reading!!  I'm testing this cross-posting thing to see how it deals with a story chapter post.  Hope nothing odd happens to it on its way over to LJ.  ;-)

linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
Once upon a time, there was a story that I was writing, posting a new chapter every week.  Due to lots of different things, it got harder to keep to that schedule, but I did try to update fairly often.  Somewhere along the line it came down to posting one new chapter a year, if you can believe it!!  That's been the trend lately.  It hardly seems possible, since this story is always in the back of my mind, but the dates of posting don't lie.

I have, of course, been writing other things, so it's not like I've been totally dormant!  I have written quite a bit this past year, though I do believe I have not gotten around to posting it in my own journal.  Methinks I need to change my posting habits a bit, eh?

In any case, the latest chapter in the Lords of Gondor saga -- half written for more than a year -- is at last complete and ready for your viewing pleasure!  Chapter 48 is now knocking on the door -- and I vow a Gondorian vow that it will be written and posted before the end of the year!

If you need some review of what has happened previously -- or if you are reading for the first time -- just click on the "lords of gondor" tag at the bottom of the post and previous chapters will magically appear!

Thanks for reading!!

linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
About a month ago, I shared in my journal that I had decided to take part in a Finish-a-thon, to help push me towards finishing some of the stories I had begun writing, but which had stalled along the way.  People voted on which of my tales or plot bunnies should be the one I concentrate on, and my alternate universe tale Lords of Gondor won the poll.  I was glad about this, because it is the one that I felt needed the biggest push for me to get working on it again -- particularly since I haven't written anything new for it in more than a year!!  :-(  I committed to writing 8,000 words on this tale by August 13th.

Since then, I have been twiddling my thumbs and wasting time, so I now have to scramble to keep from failing in my goal.  However, the last few days have been well-spent getting back on track and I have at last broken the bonds of writer's block and have produced a chapter, wheee!!

I'm sure everyone has forgotten where we were and what was happening, so if you are interested in some review, just click on the Lords of Gondor tag below, and that will bring you the rest of the chapters, plus other LoG related posts.  In addition, I thought it would be good to also include the final portion of the last chapter along with this new one, since this chapter picks up where that one left off.

Enjoy!

Lords of Gondor Chapter 46 plus intro )

Thanks for reading!  You can expect several more chapters in the next month, since I really do not intend to fail in my attempt to write 8,000 more words on this tale.  ;-)

linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
Well, the cicada plot bunny really gave the Lords of Gondor epic a run for its money in the Finish-a-thon poll!  They were tied for quite awhile there, right up until the end!  However, Lords of Gondor pulled ahead at the last minute, so that is the tale that I am committed to "finish."

Of course, there really is no way I can finish it in just 8 weeks, which is the amount of time I have to spend on this writing marathon.  So I am going to instead choose a set amount of words to write, and that will be my goal.

So, in order to be accountable to myself and to the Finish-a-thon group, I hereby commit to writing at least 8,000 words for Lords of Gondor by the due date of August 13th!

I actually calculated my average chapter size from past chapters and 8,000 words comes to about 3 chapters -- I should be able to handle that, right?  *hopes*

I still might have to write that cicada tale, also -- but not until after I've made sure I've done what I need to for the winning tale.  ;-)
linaewen: (Writing by Vermeer)
I recently signed up for what is known as a Finish-a-thon -- the goal of which is to help a writer finish one of those long-neglected blot bunnies or already begun tales that are kicking around the place.

It is set up as a LiveJournal poll, and that means any of you who wish to can vote, to help me decide which of my stories gets finished -- or at least worked on to the point of 10,000 more words written, in the case of an impossibly long epic that could in no way be finished by the deadline!  ;-)

I have proposed the following tales as candidates for finishing -- two are multiple chapter works, and two are plot bunnies that I WILL write, but it looks like I need help in getting them started.  They are all in the LotR fandom:

And my poll is here, so please go vote and help me choose which one to concentrate on this summer!  I think the polls are open until Friday, so don't hesitate, go vote!  :-D

HERE

I'm feeling quite stirred to finish all of them at this point, so the Finish-a-thon is already having a good effect!!
linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
Well, it's been almost 8 months since my last chapter, ugh.  But we won't think about that!  Because it won't happen again, or Boromir and his pals will have my head.  ;-)

Does anyone remember that I am writing this story?  I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, lol!  It's been a criminally long time since I posted a new chapter -- more than seven months, in fact!  Oy!  I'll have to be sure not to do that again.  ;-)  I don't know what the problem was; I didn't feel like I had writer's block exactly, I just couldn't get anywhere in spite of lots of lovely ideas.  So I guess that counts as being blocked, no matter how active the Muse was in the interim with notes and ideas.

If you have totally forgotten where Boromir is in his journey and what else is happening while he is making his way home, just click on the tag and you'll see all the previous chapters posted, as well as this one.  Enjoy!

Thanks for reading!  Now I'm off to catch up on what I missed over the weekend!
linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)
I didn't say much about these awards this past year, because this is the first year I have ever tried to be involved in any kind of fanfiction writing awards, and I really didn't know what I was doing for a long time, lol! But I had some of my tales nominated this year, and lo and behold! Today I learned that some of them actually won!

Here is the link to the MEFA site, if you aren't familiar with what it is about:

http://www.mefawards.net/

As I said, I had several tales nominated, and I would have been very happy to have just gone home at the end of the day with the reviews I got for them. It was lovely to have my stories read by a wider audience than they've ever seen before, and to get such encouraging comments as I got, as well. So it was icing on the cake, so to speak, to learn I had won a few awards.

I received recognition in the following areas:

Lords of Gondor won 3rd Place in Genres: Alternate Universe: Incomplete

Waiting by the Water won 3rd Place in Genres: Drama: With Aragorn

Forcing a Path won Honorable Mention in Genres: Drama: The Fellowship

Is that cool, or what?  :-D

Just a few updates here, to keep folks informed:
  • We heard from some of our friends in Pakistan; it's fairly dicey there with demonstrations and unrest stemming from people's shock over the assassination, but our friends are safe enough.  One thing we all learned living there was what to do and not do when there was unrest!  Thanks so much for your expressions of concern and for your continued thoughts and prayers!
  • It's snowing big time here in Wisconsin.  I'm thinking of going out to shovel just for the fun of it.  ;-)   It's going to be a lot of snow, but at least it's not the blizzard my parents had to deal with last weekend.  We plan to drive to see them tomorrow, but it should all be plowed out by then.
  • Project End Well is limping along, and it looks like I won't quite end as well as I had hoped, but I plan to judge my success according to quality rather than quantity, so I think I will still be happy with the result.  Anything not accomplished in the next 3.5 days will go into my resolutions for next year.
Speaking of next year, one of the goals I had was to get over my writing slump and get caught up on some of the pieces I have that are half finished.  I have several things I am working on at the moment, and the inspiration is flowing well, so I am very pleased about that.  I won't finish everything in the next few days, but I will finish some!

One of the things I'm happiest about at the moment is that I have finally managed a new chapter in my WIP Lords of Gondor.  It has been four months approaching five since I last posted a chapter, and that's just not good!  So one of my resolutions was to make sure that didn't extend into the new year.

So....  here it is!  If you need some review, just click on the tag and you'll see all the previous chapters posted as well.  Enjoy!

Have a great weekend, everybody!
linaewen: (Lords of Gondor by captinskywalker)

The last couple of days I feel like I have been playing catch up with everything and everyone. I'm not sure I'm there yet, but hopefully I'll manage it before I have to go again. More about that in another post!

My weekend turned out to be very relaxing, with some unexpected alone time that turned into writing time. That was nice! It was an interesting day of writing, too, one of those where the plan I had for what the chapter was to be about was hijacked by the characters and went places I wasn't quite expecting -- but that's sometimes for the best!

So, after two months, here's a new chapter! Clicking on the tag will get you previous chapters, if you need to review or if you are just getting started.

Thanks for reading!
