Days of discovery
May. 25th, 2005 01:35 pmIn the process of our renovations we have discovered a few things:
- The floor under the yuck linoleum in the kitchen is the same nice hardwood floor that we found under the yuck carpeting in the other rooms on the first floor. We briefly considered refinishing it in the same way, but decided that less work and quick resolution is the better option at this stage. So we will cover it with NICE linoleum.
- The floor under the even more yuck linoleum in the back room which we want to make into a half-bath is NOT nice hardwood. It is termite-eaten wood and is not capable of holding up what we were going to put in there. I'm surprised our washing machine didn't go through the floor before this. Thankfully, the damage is from the distant past and the termites are long gone, but it means we can't do anything with that room at this time. It will need a permit and more time and expense, though it's something my DH is capable of doing when he gets budget and permit approval. At least the toilet is on solid floor -- the termite-eaten part was a later addition to the older house.
- We have discovered that we should have rented a dumpster, even if it did take up a lot of parking space on our street. The amount of detritus generated by ripping out the old wood and flooring, added to all that is involved in feeding 11 people three meals a day (plus strengthening snacks) is too much for our once a week garbage pickup and even too much for our office dumpster. Looks like we'll have to call in for a special pickup at least once, if we can find someone who will do it for less than $100.
- Something we have NOT discovered: I was hoping that when we tore things out of the kitchen that the mysterious back staircase leading up to the "servant's quarters" on third floor would become visible. But alas, no sign of it -- though we have a pretty good idea where it would have come out if it hadn't been boarded up.
I'm holding up okay, so far -- though we are only on day three. I'm not sleeping too well, which is making me tired during the day, which makes it harder to cope with the noise level and harder to be as flexible as I need to be. I am thankful that I don't have anything pressing at the office at the moment, or I might just having a hissy. :-D
