We had a taste of the old country last night, when during an incredible lightning storm, we lost electricity in our neighborhood. For six hours!! I had fond memories of regular loss of power in Pakistan while I searched for candles and matches, calculated how long the leftovers from supper would last on the basement floor since we didn't want to open the fridge door, and did everything possible to get a cool breeze blowing through the house with no fans or AC's to help it along. I was glad the evening meal was cooked and mostly eaten, as once the power goes, there goes my stove, my microwave, etc. At least in Pakistan we had a gas stove and I could still cook, even if it was dark.

The 10+ guests went over to the office to watch a movie (2 blocks away they had electricity) and having fewer people in the house helped cool things down. I sat on the front porch in the dark and it was very pleasant -- though you could actually see the humidity hanging in the air.

It was beginning to get wretched for sleeping with no air moving in the house when at about 1:30 am the electricity came back on. Yay! I immediately got up and put the food away properly. ;-) However, I feel quite groggy and drained today, as a result of my strange though interestingly nostalgic evening. It's still quite humid today, and I wouldn't be surprised if we get more storms.

I am thankful that I have a bit of time to myself today, I shall try to use it wisely for relaxing as well as for whittling away at my List of Doom!
