Bragging about my boy
Oct. 9th, 2007 07:56 amThe icon I'm using with this post is as close as I could come to one dealing with food preparation -- and that's what I'm going to brag about today!
My DS has been working for McDonalds for about 3 and a half months now. He's really doing well there. He does good work,, gets praised for it consistently, has a good relationship with his coworkers, and comes home tired but content. He has actually been said to say he likes it! The worst thing about it is that his hours are not always consistent, so some week his paycheck is small, and standing up for hours is rough on him -- and the heat at the grill is really brutal! But he perseveres.
Here's a fun tale about the kind of thing he deals with often. The McD's he works at is near a school, and yesterday was early dismissal. So the kids, because they didn't have any school, came to McD's for snacks, instead. That day they had 2 "thousand dollar hours" at the place -- that means the store sold so much food in an hour that they took in $1,000. They also had a "thousand dollar" half hour! What that works out to for the employees is nonstop mad dashing and frenetic order filling, in order to keep up with the demand that results in $3,000 in 2 and a half hours.
And it all comes down to the man at the grill, because if he doesn't keep up and even anticipate, they lose ground fast. But yesterday, their turnaround time in filling orders was 57 seconds -- thanks in part to my DS, the best burger flipper in town! :-D
In other news, my head is still very much in Middle-earth after my "dream come true" trip last week to the Tolkien lecture. I hesitated to write about my experiences and post on a weekend, because not that many people seem to be about LJ on weekends, but I couldn't wait to share, lol! Just in case you didn't catch it, and are interested in reading, I wrote about it here:

I had hoped my DS could go with me on that journey, and he would have really enjoyed it, too, I know -- he's nothing if not a boy after my own heart! But he was working and couldn't get off. He was good about it, though, and didn't even complain about me going off and leaving him behind. :-) Which makes me happy, of course. I'd rather have him be faithful to his responsibilities and content about it, than have him free to do everything we want together whenever we want. That's part of growing up -- for both of us! :-D
