linaewen: (Goro from Major)
I've gotten myself involved in a new kind of project, which is turning out to be quite interesting as well as challenging.  But fun all the same.  It combines two things I really enjoy -- copy editing and anime!

I've been involved in editing and proofreading for some time -- seems like most of the jobs I take on (volunteer or otherwise) end up with me being in charge of all the writing and copy editing, which is fine by me.  I enjoy it, and I'm good at it, if I do say so myself.  ;-)  I also enjoy watching anime -- and I guess you'd call me a purist with that, since I prefer to watch the shows I like in Japanese, with English subtitles.  Depending on the group who does them, those subtitles can be kind of hard to look at, especially for a grammar and spelling fiend like myself.  :-D  But no matter, it's all for fun, really, and I'm just happy to be able to understand what's going on, even if the wording is a bit odd at times.

So, I have been wishing for some time now that I could get involved in helping one of those subbing groups, just because I appreciate what they do for fans who like their anime in Japanese, and I really wanted to try my hand at editing in a new kind of situation -- but I figured it was just a pipe dream and really would never happen.  But not long ago, I saw my chance and jumped at it.  A small group that subtitles one of my favorite shows ever posted a recruiting plea on their forum, where I am a member.  So I offered my services.  I wasn't sure if I'd actually be invited to help, since others also volunteered, but I was persistent in making sure they knew I was interested and capable -- and it paid off.  Not only was I given an episode of the show to help proof (or quality check, as it is called in subtitling lingo), I was given a second show to work on, which the same group is doing.

The second show is quite a fun little story, which I wasn't familiar with before I began working on it.  It's called Tico of the Seven Seas and features a cute little girl who has an orca as a friend and a father who is a marine biologist or something and they have adventures out on the ocean.  It's quite easy an easy show to QC, I just watch the episode with its subtitles, and make notes of things that should be changed.  Once I've submitted the edits, then the subtitles are corrected and it's posted for the general public.

The other one (the one I originally was most eager to work on) is much more complicated -- it's called Major, and it's about a Japanese baseball player who decides he wants to play in the Major Leagues.  Yes, believe it or not, I'm quite taken with an anime series about baseball!  So, to QC this one,  I actually had to learn how to use a special program for editing subtitles, among other things.  But I picked it up with only a little tearing of hair and gnashing of teeth -- and the final result of that was revealed today, when the episode went "live."  With my name on it.  ;-)

Here are the pictures to prove it:

Hopefully I'll be able to keep up the pace with this, and not shirk my real life editing work, nor slack any more than I already am on my other fun projects of a non-anime sort -- Gondorian projects, as it were.  But even if it makes me a bit busier than I should be, I'm happy, because there's nothing like using something you're good at to do something you enjoy and that gives pleasure to others as well!
