Google docs - that explains a lot. If you use that, you get very "dirty" code. (Just click on "edit post" for your chapter and then switch from the rich text editor to the html editor, and you'll see all kinds of weird code in there.)
I guess there are more ways get longer chapters posted to lj in a more or less "clean" way.
I'm going to suggest two that I use and that I'm pretty happy with.
One: don't use the WYSWIG editor on lj. Copy and paste into the html editor. After you've done that, switch to the rich text editor and go over your chapter again, adjusting paragraphs and italics and so on.
Two: Work with Open Office (it's free and pretty good). Good solution if you don't absolutely have to share text. If you want to copy & paste text into lj, save your text as html document (you only need that for getting a cleaner kind of code than any MS Office application will give you). Adjust text size 10.5 pt is usually big enough. Copy and paste, using the rich text editor of lj.
I hope that helps!
(And if anyone else has an even better way to cope with lj formatting, I'm always happy to learn easier ways!)
