For some reason I thought of this poem today, one of my absolute favorites from my childhood:

THE SWING
by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Maybe it's today's cool breeze coming in the window and the sun coming out from behind the clouds now and then that made me think of this. I always get the feeling I am actually swinging when I read this poem -- I have a sense of freedom in soaring up high and being able to see clearly what is on the other side of the wall, and a feeling of air rushing past me as I swing up and down. Unfortunately, I can no longer swing like I used to when I was a child, as I get sick to my stomach when I do -- growing up was never so irritating! -- but at least I can remember the joy of it when I read this poem!

Wheeee!

What a neat poem! I don't think I've ever read that one. Few things equalled the exhiliration of swinging up so high that you came off the seat a few inches and wondered if you would loop right over the metal swingset bar- and of course the playground dare of judging how far off the ground you could go before you jumped off...
*sigh* those were the days!

That's a beautiful poem, thank you for posting it. Funnily I just talked with [livejournal.com profile] pippinswolf about swings today, baby-swings, swingy-swings and bouncy-swings :-)

How exhilarating!
Look at the way the lines go loooooooooooooooong-short-loooooooooooong-short like a swing. Wonderful, thanks for sharing :)
