linaewen: (Lord of Gondor)
This is something that came to me in the night not long ago, after watching Boromir's very moving death scene. I scribbled it down, and just got it out again today to fiddle with it a bit. It probably needs more work to be truly presentable, but this is how it came to me; I record it here in its "raw" state (with only a minimum of fiddling).

THE KING AND HIS CAPTAIN

The King mourns Gondor's Captain:
a companion,
a friend,
a brother.

He looks upon his face, but sees not
a rival,
a traitor,
an enemy --

He sees only
sorrow,
despair,
loneliness.

Proud words lay between them,
but they are forgotten;
Harsh words had been spoken,
but they no longer matter.

The barrier is gone, dissolved
by regret,
by understanding,
by forgiveness.

Even death cannot dim the bond
That now binds them together,
Sealed with a holy kiss.

The King and his Captain:
companions,
friends,
brothers forever.

Alas for Boromir

A very touching poem, Lin. I like to think that Boromir gave something to Aragorn in that moment... his devotion to his people and the strength to accept leadership, for after this moment Aragorn's reticence begins to fall away, and he accepts his fate, though his feet must still take the wanderer's path to bring him to his destiny.

I think that if Boromir had not been slain, their rivalry would have been a glorious thing, and their loyalty to each other, King and Captain would have become a more solid foundation than Mindolluin for Minas Tirith!

Thanks, dear. This was one of those poems that comes to you in the night, and I knew I had to get up and write it down so I wouldn't forget it! I think I'll post this; haven't done a poem for ages!
