This is something that came to me in the night not long ago, after watching Boromir's very moving death scene. I scribbled it down, and just got it out again today to fiddle with it a bit. It probably needs more work to be truly presentable, but this is how it came to me; I record it here in its "raw" state (with only a minimum of fiddling).
THE KING AND HIS CAPTAIN
The King mourns Gondor's Captain:
a companion,
a friend,
a brother.
He looks upon his face, but sees not
a rival,
a traitor,
an enemy --
He sees only
sorrow,
despair,
loneliness.
Proud words lay between them,
but they are forgotten;
Harsh words had been spoken,
but they no longer matter.
The barrier is gone, dissolved
by regret,
by understanding,
by forgiveness.
Even death cannot dim the bond
That now binds them together,
Sealed with a holy kiss.
The King and his Captain:
companions,
friends,
brothers forever.
