I spent the day with some men I admire -- my son, Sean Bean, David Wenham, and Boromir. My dearest hubby (whom I admire most of all) was unable to join us, unfortunately.

Some tiny Troy spoilers follow...

My son and I went to see both Troy and Van Helsing today -- Sean Bean was in Troy (oh, and Orli was there, too, so that was nice as well :-D); David W. was in Van Helsing. We saw Troy first, grabbed a bite to eat between films, and then saw Van Helsing. I thoroughly enjoyed both films, as well as enjoyed watching some actors I admire do well on screen.

Troy was a great film, I thought; I have no complaints whatsoever. I was prepared to dislike Brad Pitt, but I did not. Of course, I loved Sean Bean! A great actor, a great character, and he not only got to be good and to live, but he had the last scene and narrated both the opening and closing of the film! It was a sad film, a true tragedy, but I am very glad I saw it. BTW, I did close my eyes in a few parts, as I cannot bear to watch love scenes after spending 18 years in Pakistan!

Van Helsing was a totally different kind of film. It has gotten poor reviews, and so we were a bit skeptical of it, yet we went into it prepared to have fun, hoping it would be similar to the Mummy or the Mummy Returns. My son and I enjoyed it immensely! It was just a lot of fun for us; it was scary enough to be interesting, and not too gross with the death of the evil creatures. We disliked the evil bad guys, but they were also kind of cool and fun. There was lots of humor in the film, which helped perk us up after the tragedy of Troy. David Wenham is hilarious in this film as a hapless (but indespensible) sidekick. His hair is indeed as atrocious as they say, but it fits the part, LOL! It was just fun.

The Boromir part of my day came when we bought some cards for the LOTR Trading Card Game and I got the Boromir Ringbearer card! Check him out here:

This card is special to me, not only because he is Boromir and extra rare, but because his card title is Bearer of Council, and that is an error. I brought this to the attention of the folks in charge of the game but to no avail. I did get an acknowledgement that I was probably correct in my usage -- that it should be Boromir, Bearer of Counsel -- but the card has yet to be changed. How sad for a Boromir fan who does proofreading in her job to have to live with such a thing! ;-D Such is life. I will survive.

I'm off to gloat over Boromir, Bearer of Council (sic) and talk to my son about the films...
