Leaving on a jet plane

Well, he's off. My hubby finally got his act together and we got him on a shuttle bus to the airport, and he's probably sitting on the plane right now, waiting for it to take off. I've been feeling kind of mopey since he left (only 5 hours ago!!), but he called a bit ago from the boarding lounge and that cheered me up. I hope I shall not have too wretched of a time without him -- I have lots of projects planned to keep myself occupied and mope-free -- but we shall see. Last time he was on the other side of the world for a month or more, it was definitely not fun for me, waiting for him here.

I don't know when I'll hear from him next; he might not be able to contact me when he arrives in Pakistan, depending on the state of affairs on that day. Demonstrations and strikes are planned in Islamabad on the day he arrives -- fun! I'm actually less concerned about that (it's a normal state of affairs when it comes right down to it) than I am about keeping myself from fussing while I wait for an email. ;-)

You all will come running to my rescue if I need cheering up, won't you?

I love that you miss him when he is gone and the sound of his voice on the phone is enough to haul you out of a mope. May angels travel with him, may his trip be productive and positive, and may he return home safe, sound and soon. Meanwhile I am sure we can manage a few distractions.

We haven't spent too much time apart in our almost 25 years of marriage -- even our "day job" has been one that we do together all the time, and so I really miss him when he's not in the house.

I imagine it will be hard some days, and other days not so bad. It kind of depends on how things go over there. When we are both there in the midst of it, it's easier to handle! Still, I have confidence all will be well.

Do you by any chance know what the demonstrations and strikes are planned for? I don't know how much it's in US news, but there's a huge blowup between the Islam-dominated countries and Denmark right now and there have been some pretty serious episodes with the attacking and burning of embassies and stuff (I'd be more than happy to give an explanation if you don't know what I'm talking about!). I recently heard there was something like that going on in Pakistan too. I have absolutely no worries about your DH being down there, but I wouldn't urge a Dane to go there these days. :-/

The demonstrations are to primarily to protest the political cartoon issue, yes. It also coincides with a time when those opposed to the government are gearing up to do what they can against it, in light of President Bush's visit to Pakistan next month, and Pakistan Day coming up on March 23. Some opposition leaders have vowed to overthrow the gov't by then -- or at least to discredit it. Unfortunately, most of those who are calling for the demonstrations don't tend to differentiate between Dane or American -- they are all Westerners to them.

Still, I am not too worried. It's not so different from any of the other things that happened while we lived there for 18 years. It's an inconvenience if nothing else. My DH knows how to handle himself, and he is fluent in the language and knows where to go if something flares up where he is. And he'll not be alone, at least -- our coworkers there are meeting him at the airport.
