First of all, prayers for my mom would be appreciated. She goes in tomorrow for eye surgery, to have a filter put in her eye to reduce pressure from glaucoma. It will be a looooong surgery, during which she is awake under local anaesthetic. She can't eat anything after midnight tonight, and the surgery isn't until noon tomorrow, so that's a worry for her, with her diabetes. She will be happy when they stick her with the glucose IV drip, that's for sure. Afterwards, she can't bend over for at least two weeks. She's had this done before, but it's still a worry for her. Thanks!
The rest of my day is pretty much little stuff, definitely "chota mota." :-D
I experienced a major case of flashback to the good old days today, while doing laundry. Went downstairs to the apartment laundry room to discover that my load was unbalanced and the sheets, towels and small bedspread I had washed together were not spun out properly. I didn't want to pay another dollar to run them through the entire cycle again, so I wrung them out by hand. Believe me, wringing out a bedspread was not on my list of fun things to do today. I used to have to do that in Pakistan when the electricity would go off and my wringer washer would get stuck in midcycle -- and I have to admit, I don't miss that aspect of overseas life. ;-) I ended up paying the extra dollar to run the wet things in the dryer an extra time, and I still have to drape them around the apartment because they didn't dry fully, but I have convinced myself that it was the better course.
DH has been researching mother boards all morning for my son, who needs to replace his to keep his old computer running just a bit longer. My son and I have been valiantly resisting the urge to scream, "just buy that one, it will be fine -- no, no more research, that other one is just the thing! It doesn't matter if there might be a cheaper one somewhere..." Unfortunately, I accidentally screamed a bit, but it all worked out in the end. I think a decision will be made by the end of the day. DH is wonderful at finding good deals, but sometimes it is nice to just go ahead and make a decision -- or let the boy paying for it make the decision. Oops, better finish up here, DH wants to do just a bit more looking, bless him! ;-)
I cleaned the bathroom today. I always wish the two guys who get it icky would think of doing it more often, but somehow they do not. Now that I am in cleaning mode, I might go scrub the kitchen floor -- it's actually no bigger than the bathroom floor in square footage, so it should only take a minute.
While shopping yesterday I got the sudden urge to have turnip curry. Do you think I could find a turnip that didn't cost an arm and a leg? No. So I got a rutabaga, which is basically a yellow turnip, and will do quite nicely. Interestingly, it looks like it has been dipped in wax. Why would they do that, to keep it fresh or somthing? Anyway, we will have rutabaga curry tonight. That will smell up the place a bit, hee! Ooops, good thing I looked it up, I just read that rutabagas take twice as long to cook as turnips. Guess I better get started then...

I have use hand crank wringers and twisted dry laundry, in another age by gone.
All best dear lin,

And I'm glad you went ahead and spent that extra dollar, just don't tell Captain Bargain, LOL. What a great guy; I can just see him hunched over the keyboard with you and DS dancing in the background, waving your hands in circles and saying, "Get it! Get it!"

Date: 2006-04-25 10:20 pm (UTC)From:I can relate about the Bargain Champion -- mine sometimes forgets to include shipping in the search, and gets stung. But he's the computer guy, so I try to just leave it to him.
Next time you can't find turnips, you might see if there are jicamas (HEE kuh muh) available. They seem to me to resemble turnips in texture, but with less "bite"; they're wonderful in chunks or julienne strips on salads. (And they're not waxed, as you peel off the rough, brown skin.) It's an ingredient in some Mexican food, by the way, so I don't know if y'all Yankees can get it. ;-)
Blessings, dear Lin,
Mum

Date: 2006-04-25 10:56 pm (UTC)From:Please don't be insulted if the accidental screaming was in any way traumatic, but for some reason the entire affair including the accidental screaming really tickled my silly bone. I am not sure if it is more amusing to me that you screamed accidentally, or that you can describe any sort of screaming with the words "a bit."
You do have a fine felicity with phrasing my dear!
