I felt very close to Boromir yesterday, imagining what it was like floating down the river in an Elven boat, after I spent several hours canoeing on the Sugar River with my DH. The Anduin it was NOT, since the level of the water was hardly higher than my waist in the deeper spots, and in the shallower places we found ourselves scraping bottom as we paddled. I was just as happy, though, since I had been nervous about being out on the open water -- I can't swim, and one of my greatest fears is that of falling into deep water. But thanks to the prayers of those who know of my phobia, I only had a brief moment of regret when we first entered the water in our canoe -- and after that, it was plain sailing, and I loved it.
Being a holiday weekend, the river was a bit crowded, and there were times where a number of us boating novices met along the way -- sometimes getting closer to each other than was comfy! But in spite of a bit of bumping and frantic steering, no one got tipped or dunked, though everyone at one time or another got stuck on a gravely shingle in the shallows! It was much like this, come to think of it....

I could well imagine Boromir behind me steering the canoe -- though it was really my DH, with whom Boromir bears a resemblance IMHO! I was not too hapless in my own steering, if I do say so myself! But I did realize that Boromir, Aragorn and Legolas had their work cut out for them, being the only paddlers in their respective boats, with no one up front to steer away from those lurking rocks. Though Merry might have helped Boromir a bit, do you think?
There was one spot where we had to portage our canoes, where I could have used Boromir's strong arm to help me with my end of the canoe. I managed pretty well, though in the process I banged my shin on a wooden step so hard that I can't walk on it today, it is that swollen. Same foot that has been troubling me recently, I might add. But it didn't take away from the fun of the day, and it gives me a nice excuse today to sit with ice on my ankle and do some writing.
About Boromir, of course. :-D

Date: 2006-05-29 05:17 pm (UTC)From:I have had a few river canoe experiences but mine were with a group of raucous firefighters and we went looking for deep and dangerous water and let me just say I was glad I wore a wet suit those days. Not for the faint of heart the rapids we attempted to traverse. It made for good stories around the campfire later though.
