I was gone yesterday, did you notice?  ;-)

Hubby and I went to Chicago for the day.  I'll write more about what we did there another time, but I just wanted to share a few things that made it especially special.

1.  We ate real Pakistani food in a real Pakistani restaurant -- the kind where the cook comes and sits with you and talks in Urdu because he considers you a friend -- and it was delicious!

2.  I got to sit and converse in Urdu with a woman and her daughter and it was fun -- I discovered I haven't forgotten anything, even after 3 years of not speaking Urdu on a daily basis.

3.  The weather was gorgeous and just the right amount of warm.  We ended the day with a walk on the lakefront and the breeze was lovely.

4.  I found something in one of the shops that was a total nostalgia trip:

We used to drink these all the time over there, and it was so fun to be able to buy one and walk down the street drinking it.  There was a Shezan plant on the edge of town where we lived, because our area was known for its mangoes and oranges.  :-D

5.  On the way home, the traffic was a bit fierce -- but as the sun went down, we heard the following U2 song on the radio, and it put everything in perspective:

Beautiful Day

The heart is a bloom, shoots up through stony ground
But there's no room, no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere.
You thought you’d found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace

It's a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like it's a beautiful day
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

You’re on the road but you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud, in the maze of her imagination
You love this town even if it doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over and it’s been all over you

It's a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
It's a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
See the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colours came out
It was a beautiful day
A beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

Touch me, take me to that other place
Reach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case

What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
You don’t need it now, you don’t need it now
Beautiful day

It was a very good day.

Thanks, love! It's nice to know folks notice my absence. :-) Sure hope you feel better soon, and can lick all these allergies that are troubling you so!

That had to be so wonderful, to learn that despite 'assimilating' back into this culture, you have lost none of what you had for all those years in Pakistan. I'm glad you had a wonderful day!

It really was encouraging as well as nostalgic! It's quite comforting to know that we can find some of what we loved about Pakistan so close at hand.

I stumbled a bit when I first started to speak, but then all of a sudden it was there again and off I went, jabbering away! :-D

I missed you, too. Glad we could touch base last night for a wee bit.

Have I mentioned that I totally love this icon of Bono? Well, if not, I am now, lol!

what a great day!! I'm so glad you got the chance to take your Urdu out of moth balls to find it in perfect shape. Good for you!!

And yay on the juice find. I remember trying (without success) to find Tuborg Beer for Mark after we got back from Denmark. He really grew to love it when we lived there and I thought I'd be able to find it here in specialty liquor stores. But no dice. I did finally find some for him somewhere, but now I forget where.

hmmm.....
