No verse today, so how about a wee tale?

In searching for an old poem to use for Verse Thursday, I happened upon a short tale I wrote one day, on a day when I was feeling like asking "What if...?"

To some this ficlet might be familiar, but it's worth dragging out again, I believe, and worth pondering anew. See what you think, and if you have an opinion, please share it!
