We're starting to hear news reports of Brett Favre's retirement.  Which will cause all of us in Packer Land to heave regretful sighs, even as we squee some more over the great season we had this past year and wish him well, and congratulate him on going out at the top.

This breaking news is according to FoxSports, and ESPN, and NFL.com is also reporting it.  However....

It's not really true until we hear it from The Man himself, and see it posted on Packers.com.  ;-)

ETA:

Okay, now it's official.

STATEMENT FROM PACKERS GENERAL MANAGER TED THOMPSON:

Brett Favre has informed us of his intention to retire from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do that.

The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever. Brett's many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record, plus his consecutive starts streak, which may never be duplicated.

The uniqueness of Brett Favre - his personality, charisma and love of the game - undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history.

Details of Brett Favre's availability to discuss his decision are still to be determined, and will be announced once set.

Seems to me we've heard that rumor before... Whenever the Bills get knocked out of post-season, I root for the Packers because of Brett.

BTW, how did your *procedure* go? I'm pleased to report that hubby got a clean report and can wait 8 years before his next fun. I have a "family history", so I'm on the five-year cycle.

The rumor is no longer a rumor, alas! It's now official. See my ETA ^^^

But that's okay!

The procedure went well, I am clear in that department also. I'm on the 5 year cycle, too, for the same reasons. I decided to have an endoscopy done at the last minute, as well, as a follow up to a previous one, and that was good, because they are checking into an issue there. But I expect it to be routine in the final analysis as well. Yay for clean reports!

Well - all good things must come to an end... how sad for his fans... but good for him. What a ride he has given us over the years! Condolences offered!

Yes, it is probably going to be considered the saddest day in the history of Packer fandom. But it is good, too, and we don't begrudge it of him!

My condolences, dear (((((Lin)))))! But wow, 17 years... that's quite a career he's had. Legendary, indeed. I'm sorry he won't be around anymore, but I'm glad he was around for those 17 years!

Ah, a day for nostalgia then. He is a fortunate man to retire a hero, and he will always be Brett Favre, a legend. I wonder if he will spend time on his own interests, or if he'll go the route of many of his colleagues and become a sports commentator. I think he has the intelligence and personality to be a good one!

The city of Green Bay, the state of Wisconsin and the world in general will miss a truly great football player, and even more importantly, a damn fine addition to the world of sports, and human being in general.

I can fully imagine why after the amount of time he has spent on the field that he is tired. What people tend to forget sometime is, it is not just the games but all the rest. I wish him all the success in whatever path he follows now.
He is leaving while he is still able to walk
without a cane or a pile of drugs to keep him going......
