... with a bit of asparagus thrown in.

I read a devotional today about how each day God gives us a different "plate" of food. Sometimes it's an Oreo day, where our plate is filled with Oreos -- that kind of day is nice to have now and then, when everything goes right, and we enjoy what life brings. But other days, that plate seems to be full of other stuff -- like all the vegetables we dislike most. It's hard to swallow what's on our plate on those days, no matter how much we tell ourselves it is good for us! But that's just it, it's good for us to have vegetables -- without them, we'd grow weak. We can't live on Oreos alone, and if we tried, we'd eventually no longer appreciate them. There's something about certain vegetables that helps us see the Oreo with different eyes. The best kind of meal is the balanced one, with a bit of the tasty stuff, along with a small helping of the other kind -- that's the kind of meal that makes us strong.

To apply the story, yesterday I started out with a plate full of the most dismal kind of vegetable, and I was having a hard time swallowing it. But I did my best, and before I knew it, that plate had been replaced with the tastiest kind of goodies. I ended up having a great day yesterday, of doing things that were enjoyable yet productive, in spite of the way the day started out. Now I'm not out to try to get everyone else to suddenly love their vegetables -- I just thought it was a fascinating analogy that really applied to what I was struggling with. I love it when that happens! :-D

I am praying for another day like that today. I don't mind a few vegetables, if I grow strong by eating them. But an Oreo a day is a good way to make those veggies taste better.

Actually, I kind of like asparagus....

Oh, and GIP. ;-)

I'll have an Oreo today, and a big glass of milk to dunk it in.
And I love asparagus too, at least the literal kind. My hard to take veggie is the humble lima bean.
(and I'm still grossed out after what you told me fruit and vegetables REALLY are... ;-)

Yes, I considered the lima bean, but I kinda like them, too... sometimes. I actually had a hard time thinking of a veggie I really despise!

:-D

I was hoping you'd forgotten about that little bit of info!

That really is an excellent metaphor! It makes so much sense, and thinking about it, I can certainly apply it to my life as well. Some days, everything goes right, on others, everything goes wrong. Or "wrong" as we think of it - so often, I have looked back on something I saw as frustrating, and found that it really had a purpose which was better than I could have expected or imagined.

Very good to remember now and then!

Exactly! Now if we could just remember that fact when we are dished up a plate of mushy brussel sprouts....

(Actually, I like brussel sprouts -- but not mushy ones)

I like that analogy too, Lin - actually a salad now and then is good for the soul, right? ( Although a salad with no croutons or cheese is just WRONG =)I like examples such as that, because it makes concepts so easy to understand and apply, without a heavy-handed message, for those who might not be ready to embrace one. You are way too cool, and I am sending a virtual cookie plate, so that you can choose as many as you need/want every day. ((((( M )))))

(((You))) I really found the analogy helpful, too. Sometimes the heavy stuff is just too heavy for anybody to embrace -- especially when we are staring morosely at metaphorical salad with no cheese every day.

I'm definitely in a cookie mood -- and what your cookies won't do for me today, that Icon will! Waldo, he's the Man!

Liver and onions... yes that takes fortitude to swallow. Biscotti is definitely better.

Okay this is really off topic but sort of on topic. I love asparagus too but do you find a very strong odor occurs when peeing a few hours post asparagus eating? I find it interesting that this phenomenom only occurs in some people. Sorry for the toilet talk :) I may have to run another poll on my LJ.

Yes, I know what you are talking about. In fact, my dad tricked us into trying asparagus when we were young by telling us what effect it would have if we ate it. ;-) Of course, being young and impressionable, we had to try it out.

I didn't realize it was something that doesn't always happen! :-D

I like asparagus too, but I also get the analogy. I've been having alot of raw spinach lately. Looking forward to my oreo day.

Even a vegetable we like gets hard to swallow sometimes, if that's all we seem to be seeing on our plate. Praying you indeed get some Oreos soon -- today even!
