Today is my "day off" and there are things I have planned for the day. Good things all, some things I'd rather avoid and others I can't wait to sink my teeth into! Some goals are my own that I had on my mental list to do today, and some are goals others would have me make my own and want them added to the list -- as usual, my day off no longer looks quite like "my" day off.
That means I have to have a good plan in order to get everything done in good time. Here's the list of what I REALLY want to accomplish today:
- The most important thing: get a good start to the day by reading my Bible -- already done!
- A not so fun thing: talk to my son's friend who is "visiting" and seems to have no plan for leaving. I understand his situation, but today is the day I sit him down to tell him what MY plans for his future are. I have to do it in a sensitive way that will encourage him and my son, but I also have to be firm about a few things. I think it will be fine, but this is an easy thing to think of excuses for not doing!
- A really, really fun thing: finish my next chapter of my Boromir inkling; it won't be done for posting today, but if I can spend some time with it, it should be ready for tomorrow. I'm going to try to do that first thing while it is quiet around here, if I can stop thinking about the things I "ought" to do first.
- A thing that is technically office work: I promised I'd submit an article for our mission women's magazine, about our trouble over in Pakistan. I'm going to write it with reference to Frodo and LOTR, so that will be fun, in spite of being for work. And it's writing, which I always enjoy. I think I'll slip a poem in, too... I'll post it here when I'm done with it for posterity.
- A thing that is always there and never done: Housework, picking up, making it look like neat people live here; meal-planning and cooking, too, since everyone seems to be hungry all the time around here.
- A thing I do "without ceasing": keep in mind the people I have promised to pray for.
Those are the things I want to spend time on today. If there is time left, I'll start adding the things from other people's lists. There is room here, too, for flexibility, because I know from experience that things will happen, things will come up, that must be dealt with and worked on, instead of what I had planned. So be it, I'm ready.
Guess I'd better get started. As Sam so eloquently put it, the thing that's never started is the thing that takes the longest to finish (my paraphrase). But first, I'll have another cup of coffee....
