linaewen: (Boromir Bad Day by El Jay iconmaker)
I slept very poorly last night -- no doubt due to late night coffee, pain, and many things on my mind.  I'm feeling a bit like Boromir must have felt after being tossed by the cave troll!

But there's not time for naps just yet, I've got things to do.  And coffee to drink so I can wake up enough to do them!

Just for fun, and because we used to do Flashback Friday here at LJ, I decided to check and see what I posted on this date last year.  Amazingly enough, it's apporpriate for today!

Last year in May I was dealing with the List of Doom.  ;-)  Here's what I had to say....

I have an unbelievable amount of stuff to take care of today. I know I won't be able to do it all, so I am making a prioritized list. The first thing on my list will be to look at my list and not get sidetracked by doing things not on the list!  ... There are [many] duties that ought to be considered -- but I can only include things on my list that won't affect my momentum, otherwise I'll be distracted and not get anything done enough to call it done. That's the hard part about multitasking -- I can do lots of things at once, but sometimes those things have to be done well!

Ah, well -- more coffee is in order, I think, to help me write my List of Doom.

Speaking of Lists of Doom...

Seduction of the Ring

The strength, the weapon
The needs of the valiant;
Be the Ring your strength,
Your weapon --
Go to victory

Well, coffee in hand, I go forth to victory over my List of Doom... I hope!

This is the English translation of the Quenya words sung during the scene on Caradhras when Boromir is being seduced by the Ring. These words parallel what Boromir has to say at the Council of Elrond, when he is arguing for using the Ring against Sauron instead of hiding it or destroying it:

'I do not understand all this,' he said. `Saruman is a traitor, but did he not have a glimpse of wisdom? Why do you speak ever of hiding and destroying? Why should we not think that the Great Ring has come into our hands to serve us in the very hour of need? Wielding it the Free Lords of the Free may surely defeat the Enemy. That is what he most fears, I deem.

'The Men of Gondor are valiant, and they will never submit; but they may be beaten down. Valour needs first strength, and then a weapon. Let the Ring be your weapon, if it has such power as you say. Take it and go forth to victory!'

FOTR, Book 2, Chapter 2, The Council of Elrond

This translated verse and information about it was taken from the following site, an EXCELLENT resource for understanding the background to the lyrics and music of the LOTR films and soundtracks:

Sorry you had such a rough night, love; I hope you achieve the perfect balance of rest and accomplishment today as you set about your goals. And get busy finding a doc for yourself so you can have those aches and pains looked at. (shakes finger sternly)
((((((you)))))))

Hi! No aches and pains to speak of today, which is nice. But I'm sooooo sleeeeeepyyyyyy.... :-D

I found an old pair of Birkenstocks that make my foot feel happy, but the soles are quite worn -- even though the rest of the sandal is still in great shape. I'm going to have Doug glue on some bits from another old pair to fix them up, and I think that will help my foot a lot.

Oh dear! It's hard to begin a day already feeling worn out. I hope you found a second wind as the day progressed!

That attention to detail is what really makes the film version of the LOTR the masterpiece it is. I really enjoy hearing Howard Shore's comments about creating the score. It was definitely a labor of love and he enjoyed the opportunity to weave in the cultures and history of ME and working with Fran Walsh on the lyrics. *in awe*

I found enough wind to go grocery shopping, but that's about it for now. I think it's nap time!

When I posted this about Howard Shore's score, the new soundtrack wasn't out -- now I have it and I can actually listen to the words themselves being sung. The ones that go with Boromir's death scene are even more powerful, whew! He's definitely a master!

So far so good. Had a nap yesterday that made a big difference. Thanks, Tom!

I had one of those sneak nap attacks! It helped a lot, too. ;-) Thanks for the comfort, dearest. Hope you have a great day today with lots of joy and no pain!

What's that icon from, btw?
